    Final Report: Condensate Collection

    The Condensate Collection Group had two main deliverables that it addressed throughout the year. The first deliverable was to verify the functionality of an existing condensate calculator. This calculator has the ability to predict the amount of water condensation that can be captured from an air conditioning system in a building such as a hotel. The second deliverable was to design a condensate recycling system that will be installed at a Drury Hotel facility, near the San Antonio Airport. For both deliverables detailed plans were developed to accomplish the required tasks. However, because of time-constraints, the system has yet to be built at the Drury hotel. Also, data [h]as not been collected to verify the calculator. Nevertheless, the group is confident that when the system is installed according to plan, it will be fully functional. Furthermore, pursuing the plans to collect data to verify the SAWS calculator will complete the second deliverable and allow evaluation of the calculator

    Three-dimensional Acceleration Measurement Using Videogrammetry Tracking Data

    In order to evaluate the feasibility of multi-point, non-contact, acceleration measurement, a high-speed, precision videogrammetry system has been assembled from commercially-available components and software. Consisting of three synchronized 640 X 480 pixel monochrome progressive scan CCD cameras each operated at 200 frames per second, this system has the capability to provide surface-wide position-versus-time data that are filtered and twice-differentiated to yield the desired acceleration tracking at multiple points on a moving body. The oscillating motion of targets mounted on the shaft of a modal shaker were tracked, and the accelerations calculated using the videogrammetry data were compared directly to conventional accelerometer measurements taken concurrently. Although differentiation is an inherently noisy operation, the results indicate that simple mathematical filters based on the well-known Savitzky and Golay algorithms, implemented using spreadsheet software, remove a significant component of the noise, resulting in videogrammetry-based acceleration measurements that are comparable to those obtained using the accelerometers

    Advances in nuclear medicine have revolutionized our ability to accurately diagnose patients with a wide array of neurologic pathologies and provide appropriate therapy. The development of new radiopharmaceuticals has made possible the identification of regional differences in brain tissue composition and metabolism. In addition, the evolution of 3-dimensional molecular imaging followed by fusion with computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging have allowed for more precise localization of pathologies. This review will introduce single photon emission computed tomography and positron emission tomographic imaging of the brain, including the history of their development, technical considerations, and a brief overview of pertinent radiopharmaceuticals and their applications

    What a girl’s gotta do: the labour of the biopolitical celebrity in austerity Britain

    This article debunks the wide-spread view that young female celebrities, especially those who rise to fame through reality shows and other forms of media-orchestrated self-exposure, dodge ‘real’ work out of laziness, fatalism and a misguided sense of entitlement. Instead, we argue that becoming a celebrity in a neoliberal economy such as that of the United Kingdom, where austerity measures disproportionately disadvantage the young, women and the poor is not as irregular or exceptional a choice as previously thought, especially since the precariousness of celebrity earning power adheres to the current demands of the neoliberal economy on its workforce. What is more, becoming a celebrity involves different forms of labour that are best described as biopolitical, since such labour fully involves and consumes the human body and its capacities as a living organism. Weight gain and weight loss, pregnancy, physical transformation through plastic surgery, physical symptoms of emotional distress and even illness and death are all photographically documented and supplemented by extended textual commentary, usually with direct input from the celebrity, reinforcing and expanding on the visual content. As well as casting celebrity work as labour, we also maintain that the workings of celebrity should always be examined in the context of wider cultural and real economies

    Search for the Epoch of Reionisation with HERA: Upper Limits on the Closure Phase Delay Power Spectrum

    Radio interferometers aiming to measure the power spectrum of the redshifted 21 cm line during the Epoch of Reionisation (EoR) need to achieve an unprecedented dynamic range to separate the weak signal from overwhelming foreground emissions. Calibration inaccuracies can compromise the sensitivity of these measurements to the effect that a detection of the EoR is precluded. An alternative to standard analysis techniques makes use of the closure phase, which allows one to bypass antenna-based direction-independent calibration. Similarly to standard approaches, we use a delay spectrum technique to search for the EoR signal. Using 94 nights of data observed with Phase I of the Hydrogen Epoch of Reionization Array (HERA), we place approximate constraints on the 21 cm power spectrum at z=7.7z=7.7. We find at 95% confidence that the 21 cm EoR brightness temperature is \le(372)2^2 "pseudo" mK2^2 at 1.14 "pseudo" hh Mpc1^{-1}, where the "pseudo" emphasises that these limits are to be interpreted as approximations to the actual distance scales and brightness temperatures. Using a fiducial EoR model, we demonstrate the feasibility of detecting the EoR with the full array. Compared to standard methods, the closure phase processing is relatively simple, thereby providing an important independent check on results derived using visibility intensities, or related.Comment: 16 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication by MNRA

    Demographic, Psychological, and Social Characteristics of Self-Identified Lesbian, Gay, and Bisexual Adults in a US Probability Sample

    Using data from a US national probability sample of self-identified lesbian, gay, and bisexual adults (N = 662), this article reports population parameter estimates for a variety of demographic, psychological, and social variables. Special emphasis is given to information with relevance to public policy and law. Compared with the US adult population, respondents were younger, more highly educated, and less likely to be non-Hispanic White, but differences were observed between gender and sexual orientation groups on all of these variables. Overall, respondents tended to be politically liberal, not highly religious, and supportive of marriage equality for same-sex couples. Women were more likely than men to be in a committed relationship. Virtually all coupled gay men and lesbians had a same-sex partner, whereas the vast majority of coupled bisexuals were in a heterosexual relationship. Compared with bisexuals, gay men and lesbians reported stronger commitment to a sexual-minority identity, greater community identification and involvement, and more extensive disclosure of their sexual orientation to others. Most respondents reported experiencing little or no choice about their sexual orientation. The importance of distinguishing among lesbians, gay men, bisexual women, and bisexual men in behavioral and social research is discussed

    Trans-ethnic Meta-analysis and Functional Annotation Illuminates the Genetic Architecture of Fasting Glucose and Insulin

    Knowledge of the genetic basis of the type 2 diabetes (T2D)-related quantitative traits fasting glucose (FG) and insulin (FI) in African ancestry (AA) individuals has been limited. In non-diabetic subjects of AA (n = 20,209) and European ancestry (EA; n = 57,292), we performed trans-ethnic (AA+EA) fine-mapping of 54 established EA FG or FI loci with detailed functional annotation, assessed their relevance in AA individuals, and sought previously undescribed loci through trans-ethnic (AA+EA) meta-analysis. We narrowed credible sets of variants driving association signals for 22/54 EA-associated loci; 18/22 credible sets overlapped with active islet-specific enhancers or transcription factor (TF) binding sites, and 21/22 contained at least one TF motif. Of the 54 EA-associated loci, 23 were shared between EA and AA. Replication with an additional 10,096 AA individuals identified two previously undescribed FI loci, chrX FAM133A (rs213676) and chr5 PELO (rs6450057). Trans-ethnic analyses with regulatory annotation illuminate the genetic architecture of glycemic traits and suggest gene regulation as a target to advance precision medicine for T2D. Our approach to utilize state-of-the-art functional annotation and implement trans-ethnic association analysis for discovery and fine-mapping offers a framework for further follow-up and characterization of GWAS signals of complex trait loc
